Summary of Experience

David has 26 years experience working in the architectural design field. He has a diverse background, working in a broad range of market sectors, including General Manufacturing, Electronics, Aerospace, Governmental and Commercial markets. His experience has been rounded with design leadership responsibility for all phases of a project. He has been the Architectural Department Manager for a large international firm serving primarily the industrial manufacturing markets. David has been the lead Architect and Design Manager for numerous large scale, fast track and design/build projects ranging in size from $1 Million to $1 Billion in capital investment. Over the past 16 years, he has focused on programming, front-end planning, scope definition and design management for complex and large scale projects. David joined Operations Associates in 1998 to establish the architectural and facilities master planning practice of the firm as the Principal-In-Charge of the Facilities Master Planning Group. In 2002, Operations Associates split into three separate entities with David forming Context Design Group, made up of the Facilities Master Planning Group, to provide services to clients from an independent platform. As President of Context Design Group, David plans to focus on the Automotive industry as the primary market while also working with other Advanced Manufacturing and Electronics related industries.

Automotive

Timken US Corp, Walhalla, SC: Conceptual design and construction documents for 80,000 SF manufacturing and office expansion for the automotive bearing manufacturer. Project consists of a two-story office, machine shop, heat treat area, vibratory finishing and assembly operations. In addition to expansion the project includes renovation of existing process areas and rerouting material flow of the existing process.

Johnson Controls RFP, Oconee County, SC: Conceptual design and construction documents for 17,000 SF expansion for an automotive parts manufacturing facility. Project consists of heavy manufacturing space for battery core stamping area.

Draexlmaier Automotive of American Duncan, SC: Human Resources Office renovation at the existing North American Headquarters building. Project consists of demolition/remodel and addition of exterior windows for a portion of existing office building.

Project Boulder: Conceptual design and master planning for automotive motor sports club and manufacturer performance driving center. Project consist of a "state of the art" motor sports track and club with automotive display gallery, meeting/conference center, club amenities, automated car storage, track support buildings (including race starters building), product manufacturer’s showroom and driving school training rooms.

BMW Manufacturing Corporation, Spartanburg, SC: Programming to build consensus among internal BMW stakeholders related to the plant wide double to single assembly line process upgrade project. Project resulted in development of a Lessons Learned Report (LL2) to be used for future major capital expansions at Plant 10.1.

Draexlmaier Automotive of America, Duncan, SC: Currently involved as Lead Architect and Project Manager for the fourth phase of expansion of Draexlmaier’s North American Headquarters consisting of three areas of expansion. The High-bay flexible production bay is 19,560 SF; the R&D/Office area is a two-story facility at the main entry of the existing facility of approximately 28,000 SF and the Warehouse addition of 41,300 SF. The R&D/Office area incorporates the latest in automobile interior components technology and includes state of the art product display and presentation areas. The warehouse addition incorporates the latest in plastic storage technology utilizing narrow aisle high/bay systems with super flat floors and ESFR fire protection.

Draexlmaier Automotive Components de Mexico, San Luis Potosi, Mexico: Involved with the preliminary planning and scope definition for a new manufacturing facility in central Mexico. Context Design Group worked as a sub-contractor to Delta Immotec as a consultant for this project. Services included participation as a team member for Site Selection, Site/Location Analysis, Program Management, Facility Planning, Contractor Selection/Analysis and Construction Observation. This project consists of a multi-phase plan for approximately 1.2 Million SF when the total project is complete.

BMW Manufacturing Corporation, Spartanburg, SC: Programming and schematic design of new centralized logistic center renovation.

ZF Lemforder Corporation, Newton, NC: Lead Architect responsible for conceptual design and planning for CP-5, a new world class automotive drive-train component manufacturing and assembly operation for the North American Components Division. The projects consisted of overall design and master planning, multiple process work cells, logistics, testing and administrative areas to support growth in the SE Automotive Sector.

ZF Lemforder Corporation, Lapeer, MI: Planning and design for an 80,000 SF Manufacturing, Machining and Assembly facility expansion to an existing operation. Project consisted of process layout, material flow planning, logistics flow analysis and testing areas to support automotive drive-train component manufacturing and module assembly operations.

ZF Lemforder Corporation, Duncan, SC: Master Planning and Design for Manufacturing, Machining and Assembly facility expansion to an existing operation. Project consisted of process layout, material flow planning (logistic) and testing areas to support automotive drive-train component manufacturing and assembly operations.

Draexlmaier Automotive of America, Duncan, SC: Lead Architect for a 38,922 SF expansion to an automotive components manufacturing facility. Expansion included a high-bay plastic injection molding expansion and a low-bay finished goods warehouse.

Plastic Omnium/Inergy Automotive, Anderson, SC: Lead Architect for an 11,333 SF expansion of an automotive components manufacturing facility. Expansion included an ESFR fire-protection system for the storage of Group A, High-Hazard Plastics.

Hyundai Motor Company, Montgomery, AL: Principal-In-Charge of programming, conceptual design & conceptual scope definition package to support a New Automotive Manufacturing operation in North America for a foreign client. The facility would be the first manufacturing facility in North America to produce approximately 280,000 vehicles per year expandable to 450,000 per year. The "State-Of-The-Art" JIT facility consists of approximately 2,800,000 SF to produce 1,100 cars/day. Project consists of programming, conceptual design; facilities master planning, site master planning and project scope definition. The manufacturing operation includes all necessary functions on-site to manufacture the vehicle. Included functions are stamping, body welding, painting, general assembly, engine/drive train assembly, future expansions of casting and on-site plastics/painting.

Hyundai Motor of America, Chicago, IL: Provided project scope definition and consulting services for new 400,000 SF North American parts distribution center being constructed to support sales growth.

BMW AG, Munich, Germany: Lead Architect and Programming Facilitator for 3,000,000 SF Automotive Manufacturing Facility to produce 625 cars/day with expansion capabilities to produce 1,400 cars/day. Project consists of programming, conceptual design; facilities master planning, site master planning and project scope definition.

Plastic Omnium / Inergy Automotive Systems, Anderson, SC: Principal-In Charge of programming and conceptual design for automotive gas tank blow molding manufacturing facility.

Draexlmaier Automotive of America, Duncan, SC: Principal-In-Charge of programming, conceptual design and construction documents for 100,000 SF expansion of automotive parts manufacturing complex to serve North American OEM’s. Project incorporated flexible manufacturing areas, R&D labs and office expansion to allow for maximum site development and optimization. Included was the development of a long-range site master plan to optimize site utilization and maximize profit potential for the overall operation.

Draexlmaier Automotive of America, Duncan, SC: Principal-In-Charge of programming, conceptual design, construction documents for high bay warehouse optimization study. The study’s goal was to maximize working efficiency of day to day operations and streamline JIS flow of manufactured parts to OEM’s. Project consisted of staffing optimization, inventory analysis and flow optimization for WIP, Raw Materials & Finished Goods.

BMW Manufacturing Corporation, Spartanburg, SC: Principal-In-Charge of programming and project scope definition for 150,000 SF high technology automotive body shop expansion to existing automotive manufacturing facility. Project consisted of "State-Of-The-Art" robotic welding devices, automated flow of materials and JIS parts interface to the body assembly line. Our Programming effort led to the development of a project scope document which was used as the basis for receiving quotations for detailed engineering and construction for the project.

BMW Manufacturing Corporation, Spartanburg, SC: Consulted with owner to develop internal CAD documentation management system to control construction documents for 2,000,000 SF automotive manufacturing facility.

Zeuna Starker, Spartanburg, SC: Principal-In-Charge of programming, conceptual design, construction documents for 60,000 SF expansion of automotive parts manufacturing complex to serve North American OEM’s. Project consisted of product flow studies, inventory analysis and manufacturing recommendations for optimization of the existing operation. Our team developed an integrated solution for facilities and process needs to meet the business goals of the operation.

Garden State Tanning, Philadelphia, PA: Principal-In-Charge of programming and project scope definition for 350,000 SF "State-Of-The-Art" automotive leather finishing facility to supply tier 1, 2 & 3 automotive suppliers. Our team evaluated logistics and supply chain requirements to identify the proper site location in North America to support the company business plan. Manufacturing flow analysis & simulation modeling was used to determine the optimum manufacturing environment. Project consisted of development of an integrated project scope document and facility conceptual design to receive design build proposals for detailed design and construction of the facility.

Consolidated Diesel Corporation (CDC), Rocky Mount, NC: Programming and conceptual design for a 50,000 SF expansion and renovation of an existing facility to house a new engine assembly line. Project consisted of manufacturing analysis to determine the project requirements and scope definition for the project.

Honda Manufacturing of America (HMA), Alabama: Principal-In-Charge of programming for a 2,000,000 SF automotive assembly / manufacturing facility. Project consisted of logistics, assembly operations, plastic molding and engine manufacturing.

Discount Auto Parts, Tampa, FL: Programming and conceptual design for 350,000 SF distribution center to serve 250 new retail stores in North America. Project consisted of logistics analysis, site selection, inventory analysis and facility conceptual design to define the project requirements to meet the business plan.

Plastic Omnium Industries, Inc., Anderson, SC: Consulted with owner to help develop conceptual design for 40,000 SF manufacturing area expansion of existing facility. The expansion will consist of four additional blow molding machines to manufacture automotive gas tanks.

Toyota Motor Sales, Midwest Parts Distribution Center, Cincinnati, Ohio: Consulted with operations management to develop benchmarking analysis of four competitive facilities to study both construction methods and costs. Worked with client to finalize conceptual design of the 1,058,000 SF facility.

Toyota Motor Sales, Midwest Parts Distribution Center, Cincinnati, Ohio: Worked with Toyota to provide Design and Program Management Services for 1,058,000 SF facility. Project was designed to be a "State Of The Art" Automotive Parts Distribution Center for the East Coast of the United States. Layout incorporates the Toyota Production System for Materials Management, Storage and Distribution.

Moore Corporation, Windsor, CT: Principal-In-Charge of programming and project scope definition for new "State-Of-The-Art" printing facility. Project consisted of flow analysis, inventory & staffing analysis and facility conceptual design to meet the business goals established for growth for a five year sales target. Project consisted of scope definition and operational strategy for new 180,000 SF printing facility. Scope definition outlined all project requirements necessary to receive bids for detailed design, construction and material handling systems.

Moore Corporation, Thurmont, VA: Principal-In-Charge of programming and manufacturing analysis of existing printing operation to determine the feasibility of expanding existing operation to meet business objectives.

Pine River Plastics, Easley, SC: Principal-In-Charge of programming and conceptual design for a new plastic injection molding facility to serve both the automotive and consumer goods market sectors. Project consisted of manufacturing analysis, inventory analysis and facility scope definition for 60,000 SF facility.

Liquid America, Greenville, SC: Principal-In-Charge of design for new prototype high end coffee restaurant chain. Project is designed to provide a corporate marketing image for the future of the company and incorporate techniques to minimize construction cost and schedule in order to maximize return on investment.

GAIA Herb Manufacturing Plant, Brevard, NC: Conceptual design and consulting services for manufacturing and processing building expansion of approximately 8,000 SF.

AGUSA, Spain: Principal-In-Charge of programming and project scope definition for a new food processing facility in North America.

Donovan Enterprises, Inc.: Worked with client to develop initial business goals and objectives for new distribution center to handle frozen and refrigerated food products.  Established preliminary sizing and flow along with floor plan to test the business viability.

Georgia Ports Authority, Savannah, GA: Lead Programming Facilitator for the development of a long-range masterplan for the year 2020. The project consists of the development of a strategic masterplan for an 1100 Acre East Coast Port Facility to achieve the goals and objectives outlined in the Strategic Business Plan for the Port and State of Georgia.

Greenville County Schools, Greenville, SC: Involved as the local architect and design project manager for three public school projects supporting an $800M (58 project) building expansion/renovation program in Greenville, SC.

General Commercial

Reliable Automatic Sprinkler Company, Inc., Liberty, SC: Principal-In-Charge for a one-of-a-kind fire test facility to support the residential fire protection market. The building is designed to duplicate the functions required for UL Laboratories approval of US residential fire protection systems. Facility is approximately 10,000 SF with flexible internal lab environment to accommodate multiple tests.

Reliable Automatic Sprinkler Company, Inc., Liberty, SC: Principal-In-Charge for 480 vehicle parking area expansion project. Project includes parking areas, relocated truck entrance and exit drive, and relocation of security perimeter and gate.

Cornerstone National Bank, Easley, SC: Conceptual design and construction documents for a 10,000 SF two level bank operations center. Building is designed to house three bank service departments along with main IT server room supporting the main bank and all branch bank facilities.

Upstate Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Center, Easley, SC: Conceptual design and construction document for a 18,000 SF three level surgery center. Special consideration was made for the exterior of the office. In an effort to honor Easley’s storied past and ambience, brick was used extensively on the exterior and a classical arch was created through the use of tapered cast stone headers.

The Fitness Connection, Greenville, SC: Conceptual design and construction documents for a 20,000 SF fitness center. Project consisted of total demolition of existing interior and renovation of space for high-end fitness center use.

Draexlmaier Automotive of America, Duncan, SC: Lead and design project manager responsible for scope definition, schematic design and detailed phases of the project. The facility was approximately 100,000 SF with 20,000 SF of high-bay injection molding as well as 20,000 SF of manufacturing and assembly space. The project also consisted of a long range masterplan to allow for growth of manufacturing areas and a new North American R&D lab. This project was the first facility in the United States for this client.

BMW North America., Oxnard, CA: Lead Advanced Planner for new engineering/emissions test lab. Responsible for scope definition and conceptual design for a new emissions test facility and western region headquarters. This project consisted of a masterplan to add 11.4 acres adjacent to the existing west coast vehicle preparation center (VPC). This required a design which would improve flow at the existing VPC as well as optimize the engineering center functions. Phased plans were developed to address the needs of all user groups.

BMW Manufacturing Corp., Spartanburg, SC: Lead Architect responsible for advanced planning and conceptual design of the 1,400,000 SF assembly plant.

BMW "Zentrum" Visitors Center, Spartanburg, SC: Lead Architect responsible for design of 32,000 SF product display gallery and training center. Includes multipurpose training rooms, 200 seat auditorium and souvenir area.
