The Child Development
Center’s Kitchen Renovation Project was developed for Greenville
Technical College to meet DHEC regulations and provide better
accommodation for the staff, students, and children of approximately 72
Infants and Toddlers. Also, the
renovation served to solve the poor conditions of existing kitchen, such
as increasing the size to provide better circulation, new equipment to
replace inadequate equipment, and provide an increase in storage space.
The Existing Kitchen space lacked the space needed for the chef
to be able to maneuver and work efficiently; it was observed that carts
at times blocked access to equipment such as the refrigerator and
freezer.

The New Commercial Kitchen made use of the existing Mechanical Room and was
designed to allow for efficient maneuverability for the chef, for example:
storage equipment is grouped together, dishwasher is located near the
work tables, and ovens/microwaves are located within the same space.
The equipment for the Renovated Kitchen is of commercial grade quality,
replacing the residential grade equipment of the Existing Kitchen.
The concept of “Open Storage” was implemented in order to increase the
storage space for the Renovated Kitchen.
This was accomplished through the use of wire racks for dry storage, a can rack
for canned items, and a pot rack for cooking utensils.
